The Lola's slender design helps it sit stylishly at your hip. Happily its narrow dimensions don't limit storage space though, as its soft walls will expand to accommodate more than you'd think. The generously sized interior has the standard array of zip and slip pockets to help keep essential items in order.

The choice of carrying straps is another practical perk. The regular strap is long enough for over-the-shoulder toting, but if you've got a distance to travel you may prefer to clip on the longer cross-body one. Both are flat and relatively wide to ensure they sit comfortably in transit.

At $158 this hobo is priced about right for a bag with such an intricate finish and functional design.

Mustard and burgundy swatches are laid over the tote's brown leather body to create a modern Art Deco design. Perhaps it's the writer in me, but I can't help thinking of apostrophes and commas when I look at these colored panels. That's not entirely a bad thing, but I do wonder exactly what Lucky Brand intended.

Musing about the design helps to distract me from the leather, which frankly isn't the best. Its finish is too shiny, almost like a cheap synthetic, and the pleats only emphasize its stiffness. It's disappointing that these are all the flaws we find in bad man-made materials. When leather is this cheap and nasty, why not just use PVC and save us a few dollars?

I appreciate that Lucky Brand has gone the extra mile inside though. Rather than sticking with the traditional zip pocket and pair of pouches, Lucky Brand has added an extra open slip. It's a small touch, but one that gadget lovers should appreciate.

I really like the patchwork and the practical design, but the quality of the tote's leather lets it down. The La Brea's $219 price tag isn't exorbitant, but it's too much to spend on a bag that looks this cheap.

I must admit that, at least from a distance, this handbag fooled me. It looks like it's made of swatches of authentic pony hair, but it's actually crafted from cleverly printed nylon. That means there's none of the ethical concerns we typically get with pony hair, and we also don't have to put up with shedding.

Fashion houses rarely create patchwork handbags any more. When once they were all the rage, these days they often seem tired. The exotic appeal of this tote helps Longchamp get it right though. I love the way the earthy tones work together, despite the differing finishes.

The intricate patchwork is impressive, but it's a shame Longchamp hasn't shown the same care with the rest of the bag. The interior is disappointingly basic, with only a single pocket to organize it. A space this large is really crying out for much more than that.

$188 certainly isn't expensive for a handbag bearing the Longchamp name, especially one that looks so luxurious. It's a bit more than you'd pay for the average nylon tote, but let's remember that this one is far from average.

It looks almost as if Kenneth Cole took pieces of bronze metal sheeting and nailed them to this purse. I'm not ordinarily a fan of metallic leathers, but the color does so much for the illusion that I can't complain. The finish is delightfully quirky, one that's not meant to be taken too seriously. And in the fashion world that sort of playful personality is a real find!

So often such unusual styling comes on novelty purses, but this one isn't so easily dismissed. It's made from real leather for starters, and features the sort of quality craftsmanship and attention to detail we've come to expect from Kenneth Cole.

The interior is generous without being unwieldy thanks to the array of pockets. These are trimmed in leather, a touch that ensures their longevity and makes us feel a little more pampered. The metal feet on the base are another great addition that points to the handbag's quality.

We pay a small premium for all those little touches, but at $348 this satchel certainly isn't unreasonably priced. Has its unusual look won you over?

There's nothing wrong with clinging so fiercely to a design vision, of course. It's a great way to build brand loyalty, as fans can rely on you to deliver accessories they love. However, when it comes to Donna Sharp, I'm starting to feel like I've seen it all before. When I discovered the brand I saw it as a hipper little sister to Vera Bradley, but now I'm beginning to get bored. The Mini Connie does the job, but it doesn't do it with an awful lot of style.

This Provence printed material is probably the pick of the range, but that's not saying a lot. I like the cheerful combination of primary red, yellow, and blue, but the execution is a bit busy. I've seen Donna Sharp mix patterns well before, but the blend of florals and plaid seems pretty cluttered here.

The shape of the Connie is simple enough, but it's got its problems too. Those long straps are practical, but they also throw this small purse out of balance. Thankfully we can at least applaud the functional features. I love the addition of an open pocket on each end, and the selection of interior pockets.

Perhaps those practical perks alone make the Connie worth its affordable $36 price tag. However I still find myself wanting a bit more style for my dollar.

They've had their day in the sun, but in 2011 they're just not chic. The Jesse from Fossil does nothing to convince me that patchwork has become sophisticated, but funnily enough I love it anyway!

After all, the Jesse's not trying to be anything other than a cute and casual bag. Its vibrant geometric patches create a bold tribal design. The use of pretty pink ensures it's not very authentic, but I can't say that I mind too much. It's playful and feminine, and just what such a simply shaped tote needs. The pale purple tassel seems a bit out of place, but thankfully it's easily removable.

The interior is spacious but well appointed, with open pockets for gadgets and a zippered one for holding valuables securely. I'd have preferred a zippered closure rather than the magnetic one, as it would have enhanced the bag's security, but really I'm nit-picking here.

I wouldn't stay this bag's a steal at $128, as it's only made from coated canvas, but I don't think it's a bad buy either. The Jesse is a relatively affordable and surprisingly modern take on patchwork. I can't see it leading a revival, but it's still lots of fun.

From a distance this seems like a very traditional Chanel-esque purse, with its front flap and gleaming golden fold-down clasp. But get closer and you'll see this Patchwork purse isn't quite as buttoned up as it appears.

Soft lilac fabric is artfully arranged into a messy kind of patchwork, with exposed, frayed edges and zigzag stitching. In a less luxurious fabric the effect might have appeared rock and roll, but in this pale purple material is appears spontaneous and dramatic. It's like no patchwork I've ever seen, which is a very good thing. I thought patchwork was all but dead in the water, and if a traditional approach were taken this purse may have been too.

Instead it's a real statement piece completed by its golden chain strap. Its slender design means you'll need to pack it carefully, but with a little effort you should be able to fit everything you really need inside. There's also an organizational pocket inside to help us out.

The price, a hefty $1900, is sure to be the kicker for many fashion fans. But if you've got the money to spare this shoulder bag is an exciting way to make a style statement.

There are little surprises here for Donna Sharp devotees. The finish, with its mix of plain, paisley, plaid, and polka-dotted patches, is classic Donna Sharp. All those different patterns could overwhelm, but by sticking with browns and earthy pinks the designer's managed to make it work. The swatches are overlaid with an unusual squiggly quilting, which makes a nice change from the standard diamond stitching!

When I first spotted the Pauline I thought it might be a diaper bag. That messenger style, coupled with the soft body, seems made for carrying bottles and other baby essentials. It doesn't have those little extras like gusseted pockets and change pads that we see in bags made for this purpose, but there's all the space new moms could ask for.

That space lends itself to many other purposes too. I can imagine it becoming a great school bag for college kids, or an overnighter for short getaways. Whatever you use it for, I'm sure you'll get your $55 worth!

I've often marveled at the subtle beauty of black on black designs, but I've never seen it look quite as stunning as it does here. Celine uses swatches of black leather, deerskin, calfskin, and buffalo.

They're cleverly assembled to create a subdued abstract design which is modern, yet timeless. This finish really jazzes up this simply shaped bowling bag, ensuring it's a high end handbag rather than an accessory for carrying balls to your local lanes.

This bowling bag is generously sized, so it's a bit disappointing that Celine hasn't supported it with practical features. The single zippered pocket has a very big job to do keeping the interior organized. The short handles are also inadequate. They look great, but they're going to make carrying this bowler difficult once it's loaded up. A few extra inches, allowing us to carry the bag over our shoulder, would have made all the difference.

These practical limitations are small niggles rather than major design flaws, but they're enough to make me pause. When a bag is priced at $1650 I expect perfection, and we don't see that here.

Vera Bradley has fun with patchwork here, using curved swatches of her signature fabrics to create a finish which is quite stylish and modern. What it lacks in luxury it certainly makes up for in personality. This is definitely an improvement over those tired old square patches!

The Jazzy clutch looks relatively simple, but its interior is actually packed with features. I was pleasantly surprised to find slots for five cards tucked away in there. That might not be enough for a serious shopping spree, but in a purse that seems so basic at first I'm thankful for what we get!

Hand-held clutching's all well and good, but it can become tiresome by the end of the day. Thankfully Vera Bradley adds a removable wrist strap for those times we want to go hands free.

Vera Bradley's crammed a lot of value into this purse, which helps to justify its price tag of $45. That's a bit expensive for a Vera Bradley bag, especially one so small, but I'm still seriously tempted.
