While the Mariposa had bold wood-toned and black colorings, this Butterfly Bag is much more subdued. The white wood body is speckled with gold, giving it an almost antique feel. Can't you just imagine a historian unearthing this keepsake in some ancient Greek site?

It's difficult to avoid comparing the two bags, even though they are really different. While I initially criticized the Mariposa's butterfly shape for being too kitschy, seeing the alternative makes me think I may have been too hasty. This butterfly is almost blob-like, unfinished and unformed. Where is the attention to detail we've come to expect from Timmy Woods?

It doesn't look like Timmy Woods has put in the work here, so I'm glad we get some sort of discount on it. While the Mariposa clocked in at $338, this Butterfly is a shade cheaper at $276. If you like butterflies and Timmy Woods' kitschy creations you may be swayed, but I still think this cross-body is too expensive for something that feels only half-baked.

Straw Studios tends to created structured handbags, so I was surprised to see it delivering something much softer and slouchier. Personally I think this profile makes the Alexandria seem more modern than most of its woven paper straw bags. Those other ones will seem at home on the beach, but I can imagine the Alexandria working well away from the shore.

The bright color palette also makes the Alexandria seem fresh. There are no tame neutrals here. The white one pops, as do the bold red, fuchsia, and lime green options. Each one is married with chocolate brown PVC. I'm a bit disappointed by this one style fits all approach, as some colors suit the brown accents better than others, but it's a minor quibble.

I love the way the drawstring gives the Alexandria a casual shape as it gathers up the top, but I'm sure it would annoy me in time. These closures are notoriously fiddly, and not very secure. It's up to you whether the look justifies a little functional frustration.

The celebrities carry high-end designer bags crafted from luxury leather and exotic skins, but this hobo is made from more affordable leatherette. On a solid bag we might notice its inferiority, but the leaf shapes help to camouflage the synthetic's shortcomings. I love the texture and drama that the layered foliage brings to the design.

The Hollywood is a large bag, but it's got what it needs to feel manageable. While the slip and zip pockets aren't too unusual, it's great to see such a cheap bag hasn't skimped on the basics. I also appreciate the detachable strap, which allows for cross-body wear when we're on the go.

The price is what finally won me over though. $58 doesn't buy a lot in the fashion world, but it does buy this hobo. For that price perhaps we needn't stop at just one!

The Getaway takes us back to the 50s with its clean lines and structured shape. The sparkly sea foam green vinyl might not be authentically retro, but the playful finish is awfully cute. It's also just one of six color options. For the most part Lux de Ville allows the material to speak for itself, although the kiss-lock clasp and chevron accent give it a bit more flair.

The Getaway is a bit larger than authentic 50s accessories, but that makes it more practical for modern misses. Its midsized dimensions are perfect for holding everything we need without encouraging clutter.

The strap is a little too skinny to be truly practical though. While the Getaway isn't a large satchel, it's likely to pull on your shoulder once it's loaded up. I also don't trust the strength of that vinyl, as the man-made material is rarely as strong as leather.

I can't guarantee that it'll last a long time, but at $72 perhaps it doesn't have to. The Getaway is an affordable satchel with a whole lot of personality.

The Spa Tote's body features a bold paisley print. This white and gold version is the most classic option, but girly girls may prefer it with a vibrant pink or orange background. I love the pattern, but the polyvinyl chloride coating that covers it seems a step too far. I know Jesselli Couture was attempting to make the cotton canvas even stronger, but this material has always been hardy. I'll take the fabric's natural earthiness over the slick shiny finish we see here any day. Just because a bag is priced at an affordable $83 doesn't mean it should look cheap!

This Spa Tote is enormous so we should have no problems carrying everything we could ever want on a day out. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if you've got space to spare! Sadly though, Jesselli Couture's design doesn't really support the Spa Tote's dimensions. The standard configuration of a zip pocket and pair of pouches is inadequate, and so are the skinny straps. I'd expect sore shoulders after a day lugging this tote around.

But as I said before, this Jesselli Couture tote is cheap, and it's also made to last. It's not as practical as it could be, but it's still a pretty good buy for girls on a budget.

Surprisingly the fashion house manages to do it with a material I usually loathe: ponyhair. All too often this material seems out of place, but here it passes for genuine zebra hide. Of course that's not likely to please PETA, especially since Dolce & Gabbana doesn't detail exactly how it sources its ponyhair, but the soft striped fur is striking.

The zebra stripes are bold, but Dolce & Gabbana gets away with them by keeping the Miss Charles' body very simple. We've seen this flap-over style so many times, but the classic animal stripes make the purse feel fresh.

The Miss Charles is slender but spacious, so with some careful packing it should hold everything you need on an evening out. No one buys a clutch purse expecting true functionality, but with its generous dimensions and detachable chain strap the Miss Charles is smarter than most.

At $1808 the Miss Charles is a pricy proposition, but no one expects a Dolce & Gabbana purse to come cheaply. Happily though, this one will look at home with jeans or a little black dress so you'll get some wear from your investment.

At its heart this is a classic leopard print purse, with a traditional frame and kisslock clasp. The orange body is complemented by a smattering of faceted plastic gems. I suppose these stones were intended to set this purse apart from all the other animal print clutches on the market. But in trying to separate it from the pack, Dan W's simply made it gaudy.

At least we're not assaulted by its ostentation. This clutch is very small, so it won't dominate your outfit. This is always a plus when a purse is so showy. However those petite dimensions also limit the items we can carry inside it.

For me the strongest aspect of this purse is the hand-strap on the back. It's an unusual alternative to a shoulder strap or wrist loop, and one I can really get behind. I just wish it was used on another clutch! Even at a bargain $28, this purse just isn't for me.

A wide belt cinches the Lona in at the center, giving it an unusual hourglass silhouette. It's a testament to the quality of the glazed leather that the skin has soft pleats around the belt rather than awkward puckering. I'm not sure the unusual styling will resonate with traditionalists, but I think it looks fun and fresh.

While it appears to put fashion first, the Lona is also as functional as we expect a tote to be. It's spacious without being unwieldy, and fitted with an array of leather trimmed pockets. Its handles look smart but they're a shade too short to be truly practical. That's no deal breaker though, as we're also given a longer attachable strap for our busiest days. White leather typically makes me pause, but at least there are metal feet to protect its base from stains and scratches.

The price is tempting me further. At $575 it won't matter too much if it shows wear after a season or two. That's not cheap, but it's far from unreasonable for a bag of such quality.

Admittedly this is one of those purses that looks just as cheap as its price tag. Its synthetic body is stiff, so its pleats fall awkwardly. It's also got that tacky sheen we find in too many inferior man-made materials. But it does have some lovely elements.

The braiding which borders the curved flap really is beautiful. I also appreciate the overall design, which is simple enough to work during the day or on a casual evening out. The generous dimensions also assist us there. Most of us should be able to carry everything we need, and perhaps even a few items we don't. I wouldn't go nuts though as there's no shoulder strap to help us out.

We do get a selection of interior pockets though, which is an unexpected blessing. The pair of slip pockets and zippered pouch is equal to most tote bags, so there's no excuse for clutter.

And for a mere $17.99, I can hardly be too critical of the material. At least it's easy to keep clean, which is a real plus for a white purse. I'd probably save my pennies for something that looks a bit more luxe, but if you're on a tighter budget you'll enjoy a bargain here.
