The Gatopardo features the label's signature metal mesh, but its animal print gives it a more modern feel. Animal prints are classic, but I'm not always a fan. Done wrong they can look downright trashy. But Whiting & Davis gets it right here. The spots have an abstract quality, almost like they've been melted, which makes them more edgy and interesting.

The Gatopardo isn't entirely a success though. The fringing along the bottom seems frankly unnecessary. The design would have looked much cleaner and more compelling without it. Remember Whiting & Davis, less is so often more.

The dimensions are just right; we can fit everything we really need inside it but we're not tempted to load ourselves up. The choice of carrying options is also impressive. We can use it like a clutch or attach the strap, which works for over the shoulder wear or cross-body carrying once it's extended. The only disappointment is the lack of pockets. The single slip is probably all it takes to stay organized, but I still feel shortchanged.

It's hard to get too critical for the price though. $135 isn't a lot to spend on a purse with so much sass.

This is a discolicious purse with its wide stripes and bold metallic colors. I really like the way the envelope flap mimics the chevron stripes decorating it, just as the vertical stripes match the body's basic box shape. I enjoy what's happening up front so much that the more basic black back is a bit of a letdown. I'd love to see more color here, but it's not to be. Just make sure you note how you're carrying it before you step out.

We get a couple of choices in that department, which is always welcome. Metal mesh feels heavenly in our hands, but no one enjoys carrying a clutch that way all night. Whiting & Davis also gives us a chain strap to use once the evening wears on. This is detachable too, so it needn't clutter up your handbag when it's not in use.

$170 is a little more than I like spending on a clutch, but I think this one is worth the splurge. Its modern style and spacious interior could easily work during the daylight hours too, so we'll likely get our money's worth.

Often metal mesh has a classic, vintage vibe, but this one seems to take its inspiration from the swinging sixties. The aqua-colored brass mesh is much poppier than the traditional designs Whiting & Davis often produces, and its transparent Lucite ring gives the final modish touch.

At first glance the design of this elongated clutch looks like so many frame purses, but there's a secret hiding inside. Four metal balls come together to form hidden kiss-lock clasps. They provide the extra security we crave without compromising the clutch's clean good looks.

It's a shame that there's no shoulder strap hiding in there as well, but that's only a minor disappointment. Metal mesh always feels wonderful in our hands, and when it's used in such a slim design things are that much easier.

The lining is also a bit of a double-edged sword. Such a bright, white color makes it easy to find what you're looking for, even under dim party lights. However it will attract lipstick stains and other marks, so don't expect it to stay pristine for long!

At $200 this metal mesh clutch is a little expensive, but if you can manage to work it into your daytime wardrobe you should see value here.

Hobos are typically bohemian, casual bags but not this shiny beauty. Its metal mesh body makes it much more evening appropriate. Can't you just imagine how dazzling it'll look when those small metal panels catch the moonlight? I'm swooning over this simply styled handbag, particularly in this vivid poppy turquoise. Whiting & Davis offers more traditional metallics including pewter and pearl, but I think this more playful color is the pick of them.

This hobo gets its name from the handle, which features metal mesh tubes loosely twisted together. All too often the handle seems like an afterthought, so it's refreshing to see one taking center stage. I'm not sure how all that lumpy metal will feel on your shoulder, but it looks stunning. And if you don't like it as a shoulder strap, with some minor adjustments it can become a wrist loop, or you can remove it completely and carry the purse as a clutch!

This hobo is bigger than your average evening bag, but that's still not saying much. You'll likely enjoy the space if you're only taking it to dinner or a movie, but it's not going to make the day to night transition without some careful packing.

It looks like a real glamourpuss, but this Twisted Hobo is actually pretty approachable at $145. We don't get a whole lot of purse for that price, but we do get a whole lot of style.

The jury's still out on what camp the Sleek clutch from Whiting & Davis falls into.

I admit, my first impression was to dismiss this purse as a half-hearted attempt from the metal mesh masters. The Sleek's really simple, and it seems a bit dull in comparison to Whiting & Davis' recent boundary-pushing releases. But the more I look at it and realize its features, the more I'm tempted to change my point of view.

A polyurethane strap helps this clutch convert to a shoulder bag once the drinks trays start to circulate. I appreciate the use of PU over chain here, as it'll be much kinder on bare evening shoulders. This is a very slender bag though, which is both a blessing and a curse. While it'll look just as sleek as its name suggests, it'll show lumps and bumps if you try to overstuff it.

The Sleek isn't a purse to steal the show. Instead it's meant to complement an eye-catching outfit, and it does that job very well. So long as you know how to travel light, this versatile Whiting & Davis clutch represents excellent value at $83.

They're unique yet unobtrusive, giving this purse volume and individuality without sacrificing its classic style. The crystal encrusted round clasp is like the cherry on top of this very stylish clutch.

Inside it's all pretty stock standard, but Whiting & Davis still delivers all I'd hoped for. There's a handy chain tucked away, ready to make an entrance when you need to go hands-free, and a tiny slip pouch. These pockets are never very functional – a zippered one would have served us better – but it's also just what we expect.

At $135 the price is right for this Whiting & Davis Dimple Mesh clutch. That's not small change, especially for an after five accessory, but its timeless good looks should give you confidence in this investment.

I've been excited by the way the fashion house has taken metal mesh into the 21st century, but with the Crystals Clusters clutch I wonder whether it's gone a step too far.

The rolled metal mesh body is classic, an anchor point for the contemporary center detail. Chunky Swarovski crystals dot the crackled metallic leather insert. I can't fault the quality of the materials, but the way it's all put together seems tacky somehow. I think Whiting & Davis was shooting for rebellious attitude, but it instead seems a bit desperate.

It's a shame, because the Crystal Clusters is a pretty well designed bag. While it's slender, its long dimensions afford us a bit more storage space than the average clutch. The slip pocket provides a handy place for stashing receipts and dollar bills, and the drop-in chain is ready to help you go hands-free once the drinks trays come around.

Perhaps a Katy Perry or Pink type could pull this purse off, but I think I'll stick to Whiting & Davis' more classic looks.

Some folks may hesitate to spend close to $200 on a purse that won't make an appearance until after five, but I think this one is worth the splurge. It's got modern style, but by refusing to succumb to trends I think this purse will look good for decades to come.

It's a combination that makes even the toughest bag look positively weedy, at the same time as making pretty purses look kind of dull.

OK, so the mix may also be rather over the top, and it certainly won't work for day wear. At the same time, many people will find the dominatrix combination of metal and leather a little too subversive and sexy. However, I think that that stunning soft leather works beautifully with the shiny black body, and I don't think I am alone in having that opinion.

Aside from the looks, this Whiting & Davis clutch does what the brand always does, which is deliver on practicality. You get the spacious body, made all the more flexible by that tactile mesh, as well as an optional handle to help you carry it towards the end of the evening. You even get a pocket inside for little bits and pieces.

Combining the traditional (that signature metalwork) with the modern (that asymmetric ruffle) this is yet more evidence of Whiting & Davis' ability to make stunning luxury evening bags.

The name clearly comes from that unusual shape, which looks just like the kind of pillow that Cinderella's slipper might have been carried about the town on. The unique pillow silhouette is fashioned from hard metal mesh so it'll keep its shape no matter how much, or how little, you've stuffed inside. Not that you'll be able to fit much inside this delicate creature!

The pillow is adorned with glittering crystals arranged in rows to create vertical stripes. The effect is quite subtle on this gold bag, as it is on the silver and pewter purses, but more obvious on the black option. More crystals on the push clasp top complete the look of real luxury.

I'm glad to see this minaudiere doesn't come with the sort of price tag usually attached to luxury items. If there were part of the Judith Leiber stable we'd certainly pay a four-figure sum, but Whiting & Davis has kept the price down to a reasonable $165.
