The affordable fashion house often enjoys experimenting with colors, accents, and shapes, so the more muted style of the Alicia came as a real surprise. Its gray color is very mellow, to the point of being bland. However I suppose you needn't worry about it clashing with your wardrobe. The shape is also very sedate, which for a bag of this size isn't a bad thing. Hardware is kept to a minimum too; there are only a handful of studs around the top and a silver nameplate to distract us.

The Alicia is very cheap at $49.95. For that money the simulated lambskin is probably softer than we'd expect, and the design more practical. A large zippered pocket runs down the center of the interior, dividing the generously sized space into three user-friendly sections. There are also a range of pockets in the side walls, and another on the Alicia's back.

But of course a bag doesn't come so cheaply without a few compromises. The synthetic is prone to flaking, as most cheap ones are, and the lining is very thin. The zips also feel flimsy, so you'll need to handle them with care to make them last.

No one gets change from a fifty and expects a purse to last a lifetime though. This is a throwaway accessory, the kind of thing that can serve you well and be replaced without too much heartache by the time the next season rolls around.

This fashion label is far from a household name, but it consistently interprets the trends and adds its own unique flair to the bargain fashion landscape. The Rossana bag is a great example of what makes this company so appealing.

I typically associate hobo bags with bohemian fashionistas like Sienna Miller and the Olsen twins. But the Rossana reinvents the style with a unique military twist. This goes beyond the olive green leatherette, although that is lovely. You'll never mistake it for the authentic article, but it doesn't have that cheap plasticky shine that so many synthetics do.

The brass metal tips on the triangular stitched panels remind me of the chevron badges worn on the sleeves of our soldiers. Foley + Corinna seems to be another influence here; that braided handle is right out of the more well-known designer's playbook, and the shape is also reminiscent of the Mid City tote. It's a gentle tribute though, as Vitalio Vera definitely adds enough of its own style to the mix.

It might be cheap, but Vitalio Vera certainly hasn't held back on the functional features. There's a zippered pocket on the back of the purse, and another large one inside to separate the interior into three. The Rossana would probably have been easy enough to manage if Vitalio Vera had stopped there, but it's also added another four pockets for keeping smaller items in order.

That distinctive handle isn't very practical, but it's not our only carrying option. Vitalio Vera injects a little extra value with a much longer, removable cross-body strap.

It might not be the most luxurious bag on the market, but you couldn't accuse Vitalio Vera of skimping for the bargain price of just $49.95.

Honestly, this hobo has more style about it than many hobos twice its price. I really like the delicate studded patches running down the seams, even if they do make the bag resemble a football! They're cute and quirky, so they're just fine by me. Vitalio Vera allows these accents to speak for themselves and keeps the rest of the bag frill free.

Lacey is a large hobo, so you'll never have to leave anything behind. I would have appreciated a few more pockets, but that's nitpicking at this price really. A pair of open pouches and a zippered compartment go some way towards keeping us organized, and it's more than many designers offer!

Of course Vitalio Vera needed to make some sacrifices to keep that bottom line down. This bag is made from synthetic rather than leather, and not a particularly high quality one at that. It's a bit stiff, so it doesn't slouch as nicely as a high-end designer hobo would. But it is tough, and should do the job for several seasons. And when it does show wear, it's not very expensive to replace!

The Sandra is another example of the label's commitment to affordable luxury.

Of course, for less than $50 you wouldn't expect real leather. But the synthetic alternative Vitalio Vera employs doesn't make us feel we're missing out on too much. Looking at the way this hobo softly slouches only confirms its quality. What a shame that Vitalio Vera chose to trim it with glossy synthetic. It doesn't have the same luster of a real patent; unlike the body's synthetic this appears like an obvious fake. It cheapens a bag which really shouldn't have looked cheap.

I can't stay glum for too long though, because the Sandra is a smartly designed bag. It's generously sized, perhaps even a bit too big by modern standards. The trio of interior pockets makes sure it doesn't feel overwhelming though, so we're merely left satisfied that we need leave nothing behind. The straps are just long enough for comfortable over-the-shoulder carrying.

The Sandra isn't a perfect bag but then again, neither are many purses that cost much more. If you need to make compromises, why not save a bit of money at the same time?

It's almost as if they let a college intern loose with a red handbag, glue gun and a packet of studs. Studs are becoming a bit outdated anyway, and this treatment brings us nothing new. I don't mind them around the base, as they give a kind of Alexander Wang vibe to the satchel. But by adding more studs around the handles, I think Vitalio Vera has taken a step too far.

It's a shame, because this is really a very practical handbag. A large zippered envelope divides the interior down the center, creating three separate and easy-to-use compartments. There are more small pockets in the side walls, a secure zippered pocket in one and a pair of technology pouches in the other, so those vital essentials are easy to find in a hurry.

Really that clever design probably does enough to justify the $39.95 price tag, especially if you love your studs!

This is like no hobo I've ever seen. I suppose its silhouette is vaguely crescent shaped, although to me it looks much closer to a space ship! It's also got much more structure than your typical hobo handbag, which only adds to its futuristic charm. The shiny surface is embellished with a mottled black and purple alligator print and sexy reptilian scales.

That structured body doesn't have a lot of give, but it should still offer enough space for most girls. I also like the way that hard body makes the purse sit up straight, offering easy access to all the items you've tucked away inside. The prerequisite pockets for gadgets and a zippered pouch for change will help even space cadets out there stay organized.

I'm not sure what I'd wear this outrageous purse with, but I’m guessing it'd have to be something pretty neutral. At a mere $34.90 though, I think I'd be happy to buy now and figure out the logistics later!

The Savitha is representative of the new breed of hobos, a bag which features all of the trademarks of bohemian style in a much classier package than we'd expect. While true boho bags are relaxed affairs with their slouchy skin and drawstring tassels, this one in deep blue wouldn't look out of place when the sun sets. That color works well with the surprisingly soft synthetic to create a look that's quite sophisticated.

You'd expect that the brand would cut corners to keep the price down, but I can't see any evidence of that. We all know the material isn't as luxurious as leather, but the attention to detail is great compensation. Such a large bag takes some effort to keep organized, but Vitalio Vera does its best to help us out. A large zippered pocket divides the interior into three user-friendly compartments. The walls are lined with zip and slip pockets, and there's another zippered pocket on the back.

It's rare to find a bag that looks this good for less than $50, but to find one that has substance as well as style is even more special. If you're on a budget, the Savitha represents great value.

The brand has a knack for creating contemporary bags which cost much less than you'd expect. In the case of this tote, you'll have change from a $50. Of course that doesn't buy you genuine leather, but the pebble-grain of this simulated leather does a decent impression.

There's a relaxed seaside vibe to the St. Croix. Wide brown and white stripes encircle this slouchy tote. A tiny drawstring cinches in the purse and ties at the sides with jaunty bows. Thankfully though, this drawstring is purely aesthetic, so we don't need to undo it every time we want to get into our belongings. The rope handles are another nautical touch, although I probably could have done without the tassel which only adds clutter.

The interior is lined with a durable cotton/nylon blend fabric. A zippered pocket and a couple of open pouches help to keep this sizable space in order. Security is taken care of and then some, with a triple magnetic snap working hard to keep your essentials safe.

This St. Croix may not work in winter, but with warmer weather ahead it seems like the perfect time to indulge.

But this particular orange bag made me do a double take. The Sofie looks an awful lot like Vitalio Vera's Sofia. It’s almost got the same name! But there are a few fundamental differences which makes this worth another look.

The drawstring bow style remains, but it's a little bolder and edgier this time around. Then there's that finish, which is sleeker and more sophisticated. Of course it's simulated patent, but Vitalio Vera fans know that the brand's bargain basement prices come with some sacrifices. The studs on the handles are also gone, replaced with a cleaner and cooler image. Essentially the Sofie is the Sofia redone for 2009.

The practical styling is one consistent perk. Outside, there are the handy side pockets for stashing the goodies you need on hand. Inside there's plenty of space, complemented by a zip pocket, a cell phone slip, and another open pocket for stashing your MP3 player or a small camera.

The Sofie also stays true to Vitalio Vera's cheap and cheerful pricing policy. In fact, just like the Sofia, the Sofie retails for just $39.95. Who says you have to pay 2009 prices for an on-trend style?

Unfortunately, it is hidden beneath a few layers of a questionable taste level.

Let's start with the good. I actually rather like the color combination on this bag and the wide stripes don't bother me at all. It has a cute hobo shape that gets wider at the bottom to fit more stuff, always a plus. So in form and structure we're on the right path.

But then all the details pop up. In classic over-detailed fashion, if you removed the logo fob, tassel, and decorative contrasting side buckles, it would go a long way towards streamlining this look. As is, it's too cluttered.

The big logo clasp on the buckle closure (which is probably pretty inconvenient, by the way) looks a little tacky, as does the simulated goatskin. It could easily have been an original choice if it didn't turn out looking a bit too plastic-like in the picture.

This might be a good pick for a young girl in your life, or a Kathy Van Zeeland fan. While Kathy Van Zeeland bags are usually of higher quality construction, this bag does have their flair for fobs and tassels everywhere.
