I can't help respecting the way she turns old candy wrappers into wearable pieces of art. Her traditional way of weaving the wrappers has created so many eco-conscious copycats. But on the other hand, her purses aren't very practical. Her material is fragile, so the bags made from it can’t be loaded up. So perhaps this candy wrapper wallet is the perfect Nahui Ollin wallet.

On concept alone, I'd say that it is. Wallets only need to hold some coins, dollar bills, and plastic cards. Candy wrappers are certainly up to the task of holding such a small load. But I think Nahui Ollin's execution lets her down here. The chunky leather tab is unsightly, and it looks out of place. The contrast stitching certainly doesn't help it. A much cleaner design would have allowed Nahui Ollin's unique materials to shine, but instead I find myself focusing on that ugly tab.

Clearly Nahui Ollin didn't want to risk us overworking this wallet. We get a pocket for cash and a single card slot. Can you believe it? Show me a girl who says she has only one card and I'll show you a girl who's keeping a few accounts secret!

So it seems I'm still searching for that perfect Nahui Ollin purse. Is it out there?

Or at least, that's what the Mexican designer would have us believe.

Because the truth is, unless you have one of those high-tech but basic cameras this little purse just won't cut it. My ancient Pentax wouldn't fit inside it, and the long lens of my brand new model is far too big for this bag as well. In fact, one customer said her iPod wouldn't even fit inside with its case on. Yes, this purse really is that tiny.

That does make this wristlet a bit limiting, but that's understandable. Nahui Ollin's signature woven candy wrappers might be eco-friendly, but they're not very strong. A purse crafted from these recycled wrappers will handle a small load, but I wouldn't want to challenge it.

It has its limitations, but for a mere $40 I'd expect nothing else. It has flaws, but it's so affordable and fun that I don't care too much!

The Moonlite is the longest of Nahui Ollin's clutch purses. I think its shape is more elegant than the stubbier purses, although something made from woven candy wrappers could never really be called sophisticated. It's more of a conversation piece, especially in this retro Peace N Love Groovy print.

Green fashionistas may love the finish, which weaves more than 400 candy wrappers together using a traditional Mayan technique. It certainly beats seeing them in landfill! It's also quite easy to take care of; the waxy surface simply wipes clean with a damp cloth. But such a material will never be as hardy as leather or even synthetic. Make sure to only carry the bare essentials if you want this purse to last.

At $55 though, that lack of staying power isn't such a concern. You'll have a lot of fun with this quirky purse while the materials hold up!

This is the Nahui Ollin we love on a larger scale. This time around, she's weaving recycled magazines to create a playful laminated surface. The papery finish is accented with leather buckles and a short handle.

It might seem like this strap is too short for such a large bag, but you can always attach the longer one. You probably won't need it though, as this isn't a purse which should be loaded up. The buckles are a bit flimsy, and prone to popping open if there's anything much inside. If you only need files and light folders that won't be a problem, but if you need to carry a laptop or books to the office you'll need a hardier briefcase.

Personally I think that makes the $250 price tag seem steep. For that money I want something that does more than make a style statement. This briefcase tote has a unique look, but sadly it doesn't deliver what most of us want in a work bag.

Of course, Nahui Ollin likes to tell us every bag from its collection will suit everyday use. However, this one does a little more to convince me than most. The leather patches in the corners help to strengthen the woven candy wrappers that are the brand's trademark. I'm not sure about the look, which seems more clunky than retro, but the practical appeal is compelling.

We see leather used again in the shoulder straps. I appreciate how it turns the chains into comfortable handles, but true greenies may not be so keen. The use of the cow-hide does seem at odds with the brand's eco-friendly stance. I can forgive it for the functionality it adds, but many won't be so merciful.

The extra space the Around Town affords, and of course the use of luxury leather, makes this Nahui Ollin more expensive than many in the brand's collection. You can find it for $210 in a variety of patterns including this colorful Tutti Frutti design.

Using a Mayan technique, we are all familiar with Nahui Ollin's style, weaving pretty contrasting patterns with everyday materials. This particular purse is best in the black and white chequered pattern, where the bold red flap stands in dramatic and effective contrast.

Subtle, this bag ain't. Inside, that bold palette becomes even bolder, as the materials grower brighter and more vibrant. Personally I always wish Nahui Ollin's bags had a different lining (red would have been nice), and this bag just shows how chaotic her patterns can get.

That red flap, however, is a lovely addition, breaking up the pattern and making this a much more sophisticated, work-friendly purse than her usual pieces. It also adds a useful functionality, especially as it clips neatly closed. The handle too continues this coordinated theme, making this both useful for slinging over your shoulder, and pretty.

All in all this is a bold and sometimes over-the-top purse, with some nice touches but a certain lack of luxury, and pockets!

This Barhandle Satchel shows the eco-friendly designer is just as skilled at working on a larger scale.

Larger is a relative term though. Packrats shouldn't pick this up expecting a substitute for their well-worn oversized carryall. It's a medium-sized satchel, but one that probably holds a little less than the average. The woven candy wrappers are surprisingly strong, but you don't want to test them by overstuffing. Besides, with no pockets to keep the interior organized, extra luxuries will only create clutter.

Like any Nahui Ollin, the greatest drawcard is that adorable candy wrapper finish which makes each one a true original. This floral print is perfect for girls craving spring, while the barcode pattern has a chic monochrome look. The straight leather straps give the Barhandle its name. They look so striking, but they mean you will have to carry this satchel by hand. Thankfully the candy-wrapper fabric is more lightweight than leather or PVC.

The Barhandle has its limitations, but green girls looking to upsize their Nahui Ollin collection will probably find a way to work around them!

I'm not always a fan of her styles, but there are many designs that have such a great combination of colors and textures as to catch my attention.

The ER collection has a few different versions including tote, satchel, and this mini purse. On this particular paper option, Nahui Ollin used recycled Tootsie Roll paper for the main body of the bag. Surprisingly, you can hardly even tell until you really examine the material.

The Tootsie Mini ER satchel's best feature is the cherry red trim on the handles and bottom corners. If you're concerned about eco-friendly and animal-friendly issues, you'll be glad to know that this design uses only manmade leather. It only makes sense since the label places high priority on using recycled paper.

If you like the look but don't love the obvious utilization of candy wrappers, you might enjoy the other two options for this Mini ER purse. One is Sunday paper comics in color with black trim, and the other is an abstract print with orange details.

Obviously the Mini ER isn't a large handbag, but it's a cute little purse with tons of personality. It's exactly the sort of thing I've come to expect from Nahui Ollin, but I think this might be one of the brand's best yet.

Despite the busy barcode paper of which it is constructed, the overall result is somehow simple and pleasing to the eye ... or at least mine in particular.

Though I'm fully supportive of creative, eco-friendly fashion, I don't usually find myself ga-ga over Nahui Ollin's candy wrapper bags. Sometimes I think one would be plenty for a wardrobe since the paper choices are a tad repetitive to me.

That's why I like the combination of the barcode print and red manmade leather trim. It's not what I'm used to seeing from the brand, but I'm liking what I see.

The flat envelope style of this messenger bag makes it lightweight and easily portable. My only hesitation is whether or not the jagged sides could be dangerous for clumsy women like me.
