Its business has gone through so much upheaval that it's a wonder it's had any time to create fashion. So I thought I'd look at one of the label's cheeriest creations, the Notting Hill Cross-Body Bag.

I find it hard to resist any bag in such a happy shade. The teal color really makes what is otherwise a fairly functional bag quite fashionable. The skin's deep grain helps it look a lot more like leather than most faux fabrics do.

The Notting Hill doesn't really exceed our expectations, but it has everything we really need, and at this price probably more than we'd expect. It's spacious but it doesn't swamp you, and it's got the right amount of pockets for easy organization. I also like the cross-body strap, which is adjustable and flat for comfortable wear.

For the money, a mere $50, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better bag than the Notting Hill. The teal hue might not be the most versatile, but it's also available in a more conservative persimmon shade if you prefer.

The new name signals a new era for the longstanding fashion house, which promises to focus on its remaining upscale labels. Many of the company's lines were sold off over the last year but modern brands like Juicy Couture, Kate Spade, and Lucky Brand remain.

Company chief executive officer William McComb conceded that "it's difficult to replace an iconic name like Liz Claiborne," but said he felt Fifth & Pacific was a good fit the company going forward. He explained the name was inspired by America's most fashionable states New York and California, a fitting tribute to the roots of its existing lines.

It's disappointing to see so many brands, including Dana Buchman, Kensie, and Mexx, shed from the Fifth & Pacific roster. However those sell-offs have raised vital capital for turning the cash-strapped company around. The business' streamlined approach should help it capture consumers with cash to spare, so it's a vital strategy for reversing its fortune.

There'll be a transition period, but the new Fifth and Pacific name is expected to become effective from May 15. The company will also rename its New York Stock Exchange ticker symbol to FNP and launch a new corporate website at www.fifthandpacific.com.

The transaction should be finalized in the next 30 days.

The deal makes a lot of sense, as JCPenney has held an exclusive license for the brands' apparel and accessories since August 2010. It is part of a ten-year agreement, which gives the department store the option to buy the fashion house out. The retail chain decided to purchase the fashion label sooner rather than later to alleviate Liz Claiborne Inc.'s substantial debts.

The deal will see JCPenney scoring the international rights and intellectual property for all Liz Claiborne Inc. brands, including Liz Claiborne, Claiborne, Liz & Co., Concepts by Claiborne, Lizwear and more.

It should be business and usual for the folks at Liz Claiborne too, with JCPenney indicating it intends to retain the fashion house's design team.

Liz Claiborne hasn't made a profit since 2006, but hopes to reverse its fortunes by focusing on its specialty high-end brands, which include Juicy Couture, Lucky Brand, and Kate Spade New York. It also plans to change its corporate name to reflect that new direction.

While Liz Claiborne Inc. might have said goodbye to its signature collections, I'm hopeful they will go from strength to strength under JCPenney. Do you think the retail chain is the right company for the job?

This purse won't turn a lot of heads, but I can imagine it easily slotting into your daytime and evening wardrobe. The gray hue is sophisticated but a little bland. However it's given some extra punch with some crocodile embossing and a glazed finish. Adding an exotic texture for interest has almost become clichéd, but I think it works well on this simple design.

However, for me the real showstopper in the large logo button which sits proudly on the center of the flap. I've never been a huge fan of logos, but this one is so abstract that it becomes a chic design feature.

This is a very slim wristlet, but it's packed with features. There's a zippered pocket dividing the interior into three sections, and another zippered pocket in the back wall. You'll also find a snug pouch for your cell phone, and another large slip for holding receipts and paper money. Can you believe Claiborne's gotten all that in a space that's less than an inch wide?

Considering its classic versatility, I think this wristlet represents great value at $43.99.

This icy-colored Snow Cone Pop tote could serve you well at any time of year.

This isn't a very luxurious handbag, but it makes up for it with its retro style. There's something so appealing about the blend of aqua cotton and blue patent trim. I'm not so sure about the large panel on the front of the bag, but the piping and rolled handles make this simple tote a lot more fun. While I don't like how it looks I can forgive the panel though; it hides a large pocket which is sure to come in handy.

A flap inside the purse has a zippered pocket and open slip built in. There's also a large coin purse, which can be detached if you want to travel light. I imagine taking this smaller purse off for mid-morning coffee runs or visits to the grocery store.

The only disappointment for me is the lack of closure. The platform base should help it stay upright, but some extra security would give us all more peace of mind.

This Liz Claiborne tote is fairly simple, but it's got a lot of personality for its $70 price tag.

Its quirky name perhaps comes from this purse's attempt to project an air of opulence. It falls a little short of that in my opinion. I can't quite put my finger on why, but the croc-embossing doesn't convince me. The polyvinyl is also a bit too shiny; it lacks the deep luster of a patent leather. But this shoulder bag does appear richer than its meager $34 price tag would suggest.

It's a simple purse though, with a basic flap design and few features. It's not very big, and its single zippered pocket provides little organizational assistance. Its shoulder strap is a little longer than the average, but perhaps it only stands out because the rest of the design is so ordinary.

The Money Talks purse isn't likely to make many of us swoon, but if your budget is feeling stretched it's a good way to make your outfit look a bit richer without spending a lot of cash.

It may not suit everyday use, but you'll probably find yourself dragging it out of the closet time and time again when you've only got a few bits and pieces to carry.

It may not be big, but its leather finish makes the Jackie's $98 price tag seem very reasonable.

While it may have little to do with disco dance moves, there's something electrifying about this tote. Perhaps I'm just impressed because it is so different to Liz Claiborne's usual fare, but I love this sexy scaled print. Liz Claiborne calls it a croc, although it seems more serpentine to me. Whatever beast it is, the mottled scale prints look gorgeous against the peacock blue skin.

That skin is synthetic, which isn't a great surprise when we're paying less than $100. It's very soft though, so we don't feel like we're making too much of a compromise. As a bit of a bonus this manmade material is also resistant to splashes and stains.

The beautiful printed body gives way to a more traditional Liz Claiborne look inside. The tan lining is drab, but considering the wild print outside that's not too disappointing. The space is functional, if not overly inspired, with synthetic trimmed pockets and pouches to help you stay organized.

The Electric Slide tote may be a little too daring for Liz Claiborne's faithful fans, but I predict it might make those who'd previously dismissed the designer as dull take notice.
