Such is the case with the Dunsmouth Hobo, which sees some promising elements clumsily sandwiched together.

I can't help thinking of the Bride of Frankenstein when I look at this hobo. The gathered pleated section near the base is interesting, but the delicate studs which cover it take the accent over the top. I don't mind the decorative hardware underneath the straps, but the double rings seem like a bit too much metal. The ties at the sides only add to the clutter.

The Dunsmouth is pretty practical though, with plenty of space and pockets too. The slouchy design makes it a little difficult to get items in and out of the bag, but at least the long straps make carrying simple.

The price is probably the Dunsmouth's biggest drawcard. $36.95 doesn't buy us a lot in the modern world, but it will buy this bag. If you're on a tight budget, that may be enough to tempt you. Just be prepared to accept a few compromises if you do. The Dunsmouth is made from a synthetic so cheap that many customers report a strong fishy odour. The scent is so overpowering that even attempts to air it out have been futile.

Personally I'd rather save some extra cash and indulge in a bag that doesn't smell like a working wharf, wouldn't you?

So it's only fitting that Laurel & Sunset's used the word to christen this hobo bag.

I wouldn't say the Utilitarian's an ugly duckling, but it clearly puts functionality first. Its dark brown color is a bit boring but it'll easily work with your wardrobe, no matter what the season. Silver-toned hardware pops against the dark skin, but the zips aren't simply aesthetic. They open up to reveal five pockets, and that's all before we even get inside!

The main compartment is just as smart, with a zippered central envelope dividing it into several user-friendly sections. There are more pockets in the side walls, so the hardest part is remembering just where you put your essential items! We're further spoiled with a pair of flat shoulder straps and an attachable cross-body one for busy days on the go.

Laurel & Sunset charges just $39.95 for this hobo, so you can probably guess that it's not the best quality. The interior lining is a little thin and the synthetic exterior feels a bit stiff. But what it lacks in luxury, Laurel & Sunset makes up for in substance with this Utilitarian hobo bag.

Wide horizontal stripes in pretty, frothy shades adorn the large, slouchy handbag. It's unashamedly girly, but I love the sweetness of these pastel hues. Laurel and Sunset knows it won't suit everybody's tastes though, so it's also offered up more classic black and white and brown and white combos.

Whichever one you pick you'll appreciate all the features Laurel and Sunset includes. It's easy to see just how enormous this hobo is, but the brand has given us all the organizational aids we need. There are three interior pockets, and another large zippered one on the back. And you can also see the matching cell phone pouch, which protects your technology and looks great. The straps are just the right size for easy carrying, which helps me forgive the tacky hardware at their base.

It's too easy to point to this hobo's shortcomings, from its cheap synthetic body to its untrimmed pockets. But we all know that it's rare to find something so fun and functional for a mere $29.95. Girls on a budget will see real value here.

There's certainly nothing subtle about this baby. Its synthetic body is meant to mimic python skin, and it might have pulled it off if it wasn't that lurid shade of purple. The mottled pattern is very busy, but Laurel & Sunset further confuses the eye by adding large structured flowers along the top. It's probably too much, but I have to tip my hat to the designer for trying.

Strip away all that gaudiness though and the Dirossi is actually a pretty practical purse. The main compartment is spacious, with two generous pockets on either side. There are three more small pockets in the main section too, so there really is a place for everything. We don't even get all those functional features in many high end designer bags, so I'm impressed to see them in a satchel that costs just $39.95.

A bag that's so completely over the top is easy to criticize, but I'm sure someone out there is going to love its ostentatious attitude. I just hope they pair it with a neutral outfit!

Honestly I think so, although girls with more adventurous tastes may disagree! One thing I'm sure we'll concur on is how busy this bag is. Taking center stage is the Gypsy Girl the tote's named for, a hippie type with a headscarf embellished with tiny pinhead studs. There are more studs down the sides of her face, but Laurel & Sunset's still not done. It completes the look with a heavy handed dose of faux snakeskin. It forms the handles, trims the top, and even creates tassels hanging down each side. Yes, as I said, there's an awful lot going on.

With all of that handiwork, I'm surprised Laurel and Sunset had any time to spend on the insides. But it seems they did, as the Gypsy Girl is better appointed than most high end designer bags. Sure we don't see have reinforced pockets or a luxury lining, but this tote has what we need to stay organized. A large zippered pocket divides the interior into three separate compartments, while a plethora of small pockets take care of your valuables.

If you've fallen for it, you'll be thrilled that you can own the Gypsy Girl tote for just $39.95. Sadly though while the price is low, the tote is just too much for me!

All too often it seems that the label cuts corners to keep those prices down. But I may have to change my tune after spotting this impressive Flower Bloom tote.

It's easy to see where this tote gets its name. A large structured flower is the tote's centerpiece, and it really shines. The attention to detail is impressive, particularly for the price. Variegated leaves hang beneath the bloom, and woven synthetic makes a lovely pollinated center. The flower is showy, but by choosing that simple earthy brown Laurel and Sunset makes this tote very wearable.

The shape is simple too, but I can't help thinking of a flower pot when I look at it. I don't think that's a bad thing though. It makes it a little more interesting, and its flat base is very practical.

Speaking of practicality, Laurel and Sunset again surpass my expectations on that score. We get a whopping five pockets inside, including one that's the perfect size for a cell phone. There's enough room to suit our everyday needs, and the cotton/nylon blend lining should take some beating.

Considering its good looks and functional features, I really don't know how Laurel and Sunset can offer this tote for $36.95. It's not the most sophisticated bag on the market, but it is a whole lot of fun.

The GaGa hobo is every bit as attention grabbing as the musical diva that shares its name, but I'm just not sure this purse will attract the kind of attention that anyone wants.

This looks like the sort of handbag that a rainbow might have vomited. I ordinarily love color, but I'm having trouble embracing the cutesy mix of blue, pink, yellow, and green here. The red bow on the front, with its tribal beads, just caps off a look which, for me, really doesn't work at all.

I'll try to look on the bright side though, an ironically difficult thing when faced with such a colorful spectacle. The GaGa is a good size for everyday use, and it's kitted out well with a zippered pocket and pair of open slips for personal technology. The loosely braided shoulder strap also looks very inviting. I imagine carrying this would feel great, even if it doesn't look so good.

Perhaps if you've got Lady GaGa's eclectic fashion sense you could work this cheap and excessively cheerful hobo. Personally though, I'll steer well clear.

It doesn't even try to pretend to be original here; this is virtually a carbon copy of the Venita Bow Satchel that Versace released last year.

I have to be honest; I didn't like the Versace bag and I can't say I like this impersonator any better. It still seems that the bag is wearing a straitjacket with its confused, woven seatbelt surface. But if you were dazzled by the daring design, this is an affordable alternative.

Rather than costing more than $4000, this Laurel and Sunset version is priced at just $39.95. The only discernible differences seem to be the smooth handles, the far more practical shoulder strap, and the lack of Versace nameplate. Honestly, these don't really seem like negatives!

While the materials may be significantly cheaper for that price Laurel and Sunset hasn't skimped on practical features. A zippered pouch divides the generous interior down the center. A cell phone and other small items have a place in the three side wall pockets.

Many people come down hard on handbag impersonators like this, and I understand their point of view. But I wonder, will this bag's existence really affect Versace? Anyone who can afford a $4000 handbag, will probably snap up the original. Other fashion fans can find a much cheaper alternative in this Laurel and Sunset satchel.

Now the Macarena is making a comeback thanks to Laurel and Sunset.

While the dance was flamboyant and fun, this is a more mellow number. The details are interesting, but the gentle gray colored synthetic letter mutes the effect. It's a good thing too, because those accents could have looked very busy. Horizontal pleats add further texture to this slouchy bag. This gentle ruching is accented with a row of leatherette buckles which runs down the center of the bag. The rope-like metal details underneath the handles add a vaguely Western vibe to proceedings. These accents look a little out of place, but by using complementary colors they're a little easier to ignore.

This is a really practical tote, with plenty of useable space and enough pockets to keep it organized. I particularly appreciate the large zippered pouch which separates the tote into three separate compartments. The cotton-nylon blended lining is durable, although its boring beige color isn't very exciting. The slightly sunken zip closure offers security without disturbing the tote's good looks.

The Macarena carefully toes the line between classic and cutting edge. And at just $39.90, it won't break the bank either!

The secret is using synthetic imitation lambskin rather than the real deal. It doesn't feel as soft, and it probably won't last as long, but if you're on a budget you won't mind the sacrifices too much. At least it looks good in either metallic bronze or this regal purple shade.

The faux lambskin is offset by those modern brass studs. What I like most here is the restraint shown. While studs are in demand right now, who knows what the next season holds? By using the metal as an accent rather than the feature, the look is a lot more timeless.

The interior is better appointed than you might expect for the money. The lining, made of a cotton nylon blend, will probably hold up for a few seasons. There's a large zippered pocket in one wall and a couple of open pouches in the other. Your belongings will stay safe inside thanks to the zip closure.

Finding a quality bag under $50 is rare. Spotting one that look as good as the Samira is rarer still. It might fail after a few seasons, but at least it'll serve you well while it stays in one piece.
