The Bauer's boxy shape is modernized with golden zippered sides and a chic turn-lock clasp. I love the way the hardware pops against the rich red lambskin. This hue is quite daring, but Hype also offers the design in more sedate black and cognac colors. The red's my favorite, but I'm impressed Hype attempts to appease all tastes.

The plainweave lining is hardy, but I'm disappointed that the pockets aren't reinforced with leather. We wouldn't necessarily expect that at this price point, but Hype found the budget to add a leather logo patch inside. Using the material to trim the pockets would have been a much smarter design decision.

The lack of metal feet on the base is also disappointing. The Bauer's designed to suit our everyday needs, but that oversight means it may look banged up before its time.

It feels mean to find fault with a bag costing just $250. That price rarely buys us an accessory made of such luxurious materials. It may not be perfect, but it comes closer than most purses at this price point.

From the front it seems like so many conformist carryalls. Its smooth brown leather is a safe choice, and the nude leather accents aren't much wilder. The barrel shape is also a classic style decision, one that's meant to maximize storage space rather than turn heads.

But turn it around and you'll discover the Harrison isn't the wallflower it first appears. Leopard printed ponyskin panels at each end give this barrel bag an unexpectedly fierce finish.

Packrats will love the Harrison's generous dimensions. This isn't one of those sleek and slender carryalls. Its barrel shape makes it perfect for carrying bulky items, and plenty of them. After all, with just one zippered pocket inside most small items will likely get lost at the bottom! Using the regular rolled handles may be difficult if we fill it full, but Hype's added a long, wide cross-body strap to help us out.

At ₤159, the Harrison is a great buy for a bag that combines substance, style, and spirit.

I really like the James' art deco styling. Its rectangular turn-lock and elegant seaming are a bit of a throwback to the past, but they also seem surprisingly fresh. The soft lambskin is also lovely, although its gray base color is questionable. A paler hue would have seen the blue panel stand out even more and made the purse seem less drab.

The James is a slender creature, as the most elegant of clutch purses often are, but Hype does its best to keep it serviceable. With a card slot and array of pockets you could leave your wallet behind and use the main compartment for more important things. The space also has a chain strap tucked away, but you can remove it completely if you'd prefer to minimize the clutter.

I'd ordinarily hesitate to spend close to $200 on a clutch but the James' versatile styling is tempting me. This is the sort of purse that would look just as fetching with jeans or an evening gown. If you can work it into your everyday wardrobe you're likely to see value here.

The structured design and high quality leather make the Claudia feel really tidy. I love the stud and strap details that decorate the center of the purse, but I'm less fussed on the studs around the edges. All that silver just feels like overkill to me. Removing them would have made the Claudia a lot less complicated, and in my opinion a bit more stylish. As they say, sometimes less is more.

The interior is roomy enough to handle everything you really need, but I wouldn't call it large. Personally I think that works in the Claudia's favor, as we're not tempted to fill it with junk. The handle's really too short to make carrying anything more than what's vital easy.

The high-quality materials make the Claudia worth its $225, although I still have my reservations. Military inspired accessories look stylish right now, but once the trend passes this hobo may date.

The Russel manages to interpret the feminine structured bags of the 50s on a much larger scale. Our eyes are instantly drawn to the front panel with its even diamond weave, but this isn't the only element of interest. Its flap-latch closure and metal reinforced corners are a lovely complement to the pale pearl leather. The shape is also intriguing; it's slender with a sexy curved top and strong angular base.

Such a slim bag requires careful packing, but with a little effort you should be able to fit everything you need inside and a few extras as well. Front and back pockets are complemented by even more inside.

The short handles are perfectly retro, but not so practical. When you've got traveling to do you can attach the longer strap for more convenient carrying. I don't think this chain has quite the same visual appeal, but it'll get you where you need to go.

The Russel is a great option for girls who've always admired the Mad Men look, but couldn't pare down their possessions enough to suit such small bags. This satchel helps to bring that vintage vibe into the present day.

It might be just me, but I can't help thinking of a straitjacket when I look at this purse. Something about all those criss-crossing belts screams metal asylum garb. But perhaps that unhinged personality is just what Hype was aiming for.

I could have swallowed a few stud embellishments, but by using a combination of round and point pyramids I think Hype has gone too far. However this isn't a bag about subtlety, so Hype must just get away with this level of excess.

The looks give the Sabrina the X factor, but its functional features are equally impressive. While you're drooling over the buckles you might miss the magnetic snap pocket, two slide pockets and two zippered compartments hidden on the exterior. There's more where that came from, with three open pockets and a large zippered pocket inside.

My only disappointment is the handles, which are just a shade too short for all but the slimmest girls to carry comfortably over their shoulder. A few extra inches would have made all the difference.

But at an affordable $325, I think most daring fashionistas will be willing to overlook this little niggle.

Meetings of girly features and more aggressive touches are all the rage in fashion at the moment. You know: combining lace with leather, or bows with denim. The Hype interpretation of this trend is this Christy tote, which matches cute gathered ruffles with aggressive studded pockets.

The effect, generally, is quite positive. Because of the bright red leather this is an obvious bag anyway, and that means that the somewhat over-the-top nature of the gold studs and ruffles manages to work. However, it does look a little pieced together, and is lacking that continuity that can make a good handbag into a great one. You know, that difference that means every element fits together seamlessly.

If this north/south hold-all seems somewhat try-hard, then at least it succeeds when it comes to size and capacity. Not only do those studs conceal exterior pockets, but that slouchy leather gives you tons of room inside, perfect for those girls who need everything except the kitchen sink with them when they leave the house.

At the reasonable price of just $139, this gathered tote is stylish and cool.

Despite its stuffy name, I can't imagine any real medical practitioner carrying this satchel bag. With its snake print embossing and shiny studs, it'd look more at home at a heavy metal concert than a hospital. Those accents could have become overwhelming, but Hype has been very clever when designing this satchel.

The delicate snakeskin scales are unobtrusive, adding just a touch of luxury without trying to dominate the design. The studs have also been applied with similar restraint. By keeping them predominantly on the front pocket, the hardware is also in the balance.

That clever approach to design happily extends beyond the aesthetics. I'd call this a mid-sized bag, so I was surprised to see two separate main compartments. This sort of luxury is typically reserved for much larger handbags, but it's still a blessing here. If you can't keep these sections free of clutter, you're not trying hard enough!

My only complaint is that the dual handles are a shade too short. It's not as problematic as it may have been on a larger bag, but carrying this bag by hand may still be awkward if you've got a long day ahead.

Considering all the value Hype offers inside and out, I'm pleasantly surprised to see the Helen priced at $250. It's still not small change, but for a bag that offers so much it's a steal.
