Burberry abandons its usual Nova check for a much wilder herringbone print with this Ada clutch.

I didn't think I'd ever describe herringbone as wild either, but the treatment Burberry's used here is quite surreal. It reminds me of those optical illusions that make your eyes go all cross-eyed. The unusual print makes the classic black and white combination seem fun and fresh. It also distracts our eyes so much that we barely notice the bag isn't made from Burberry's favorite leather, but a much more casual raffia. The natural fiber is used well though. I love the way it's casually frayed around the curved flap, reminding us that this casual woven straw is the real deal.

I like the way the skinny black belt sets off the design, but I worried it might make the Ada difficult to use. Thankfully it's just an illusion that it wraps around the clutch's body. It's not really holding the flap down; a magnetic snap takes care of that. The Ada's dimensions are sizable but it's sophisticatedly slender. That makes it appear more dressed up than your average raffia clutch but it also compromises storage space. But since when do we buy a clutch for practicality?

Perhaps the answer to that question is, when it costs $750. That's the sort of price that makes us think we should have it all, at least when we're not getting luxury materials. I personally think it's too expensive for a raffia bag that doesn't even have functionality on its side, but its looks are so striking I can understand anyone who's still tempted!

Burberry’s Profits Up | British Fashion House Increases Sales by 30%

Burberry continues to defy the current financial climate after it posted a 30% sales increase for the first half of the year. Total revenue for the first and second quarters rose to 830 million pounds, or roughly $1.29 billion US dollars, up from 641 million pounds in 2010.

These results came as a surprise to fashion analysts, who predicted the company would enjoy sales of 818 million pounds in the period. However it outperformed those estimates thanks to strong retail sales. Demand for Burberry's luxury products increased in key markets, including New York, Paris, London, Hong Kong, Dubai, and Taipei.

The results are outstanding considering the troubled state of the Eurozone economies and concerns that China’s luxury goods market may be slowing down. Analysts say Burberry's latest posting prove that despite the world’s finances, luxury goods are as popular as ever. This isn't just good news for Burberry; it has positive implications for all prestige fashion labels. It seems that while times are tough, people are investing in high-end goods rather than wasting their limited resources on throwaway items.

Burberry hopes to capitalize on its current success by opening at least 10 stores in the second half of the financial year. We can expect to see new Burberry boutiques in Paris, China, and Latin America.

Burberry's designs this season have been really exciting. It's managed to combine its tailored aesthetic with some edgier styles, and the results are truly beautiful. This buckled hobo is the perfect example of what I mean.

The maroon leather on this bag is rich and lustrous. It's almost cordovan, which gives it the tiniest hint of retro flavor. The bag also comes in black, however, so if you want something thoroughly modern that might be the way to go. The glaze on the leather is really nice in either color. It's got sort of a semi-gloss on the body of the bag, and it's shiny on the straps, which is a subtle textural contrast.

You really can't do much better than the classic design of this tote. It's large and a little bit structured, but with plenty of slouch. The buckle and strap details are super cool and very rock 'n' roll. The dual straps give you several carrying options, which is nice, and for once the shoulder strap isn't unreasonably long.

This bag is unique in that it covers all the current trends without looking overly trendy, and it's large and versatile enough for a variety of uses.

Burberry Metallic Cracked Leather Wristlet | Cool Textured Pewter Clutch

Burberry is a line of impeccable taste. Its stalwart conservative days are over, though, and the line's designs are taking a much more fashion forward stance. This cracked leather wristlet is a great example of how it's been able to combine its classic good looks with a more modern sensibility.

This pewter cracked leather is absolutely stunning. I love the way the texture enhances the metallic treatment on the leather. It gives it an organic, almost lizard-y appearance that is exotic but not overdone.

The simple shape of the wristlet lets the material take center stage. The sleek minimalist design is great for evening. Its petite and the convenient wrist strap makes it really comfortable to carry. The exposed zipper is a great design touch, and its front placement makes it really visible. Honestly, I think a top zipper is somewhat more practical, but the front zipper adds a lot to the edgy aesthetic.

At $425, I think this clutch is slightly overpriced, but it's got such a cool look that it might be worth the high price tag if you happen to have a little extra spending money this month. Personally, I'll be waiting for a sale.

Burberry brings some luxury to its iconic check fabric with this Bridle House Check clutch.

You'll have to look hard to see that plaid cotton twill, as it's been obscured by diagonal strips of brown leather. These stitched strips move this way and that, creating an intricate geometric pattern along the clutch's surface. The effect is striking, and one which makes this fairly simply shaped clutch very appealing.

Simple works in the Bridle House Check Clutch's favor here. From a design standpoint it allows the clutch's leather details to shine, and from a practical one it maximizes storage. It's long but slim, like a stylish pencil case and able to fit just as much inside.

It's not large enough to become unwieldy but there's still a detachable strap when we'd prefer to go hands free. This is made from more leather rather than the traditional chain to complement the purse's elegant leather accents.

This is one of those rare clutches that would work just as well during the day or on an evening out. Its lack of feminine features is perfect for daylight hours, but its striking appearance could make a big impression when the sun goes down.

At $1095 it's very expensive for a clutch, but if you can manage to work it into your everyday wardrobe it might just be worth the splurge.

Burberry has been so impressive, lately. I am becoming a major fan of this very classic, but still contemporary, line. This slouchy oversized tote is a little dramatically oversized for my taste, but I know a lot of women would kill to own it.

The soft olive color of this tote is kind of magical. I know, I know. Who uses the word "magical" to describe something khaki? But that's just it. It is khaki, but it doesn't look ordinary, which, I think, is pretty magical. Plus it has all these great contrast seam details that make the material look extra special.

Don't be fooled by the semi-structured look of this bag. It looks pretty tailored, but the effect when carried is totally boho. Sure, it's got the shape of a tote bag, but it wears like a hobo. Which brings me to the size. This bag is giant. I could pack for a week in this thing. So, it's really better suited for someone who needs a lot of space. Fortunately, the handles are well designed enough to carry the load.

I think that $1,495 is pretty reasonable for a bag that you could use as luggage if you needed to, plus the design is beautifully versatile.

Burberry used to be known for its preppy, traditional aesthetics. Of course it still makes all its classic check accessories, but now its styles are more contemporary classic than conservative. This metallic leather wristlet is a great example of the label's modern style.

The gold leather on this clutch is eye-catching and exciting. The gently weathered texture gives it almost a crackled look, and the quilting adds extra dimension. I love the monochrome that is created with the all gold-toned hardware.

This wristlet is more wallet than handbag shaped. I'm not sure that I would always like the shape, but it suits this style well. It's small, practical, and really easy to carry. The gold rope chain wrist strap is awesome. Not only is it really utilitarian, it's also delicate and beautiful. This bag is definitely on the more casual side, but it's still got a dressy edge.

Frankly, I think that this wristlet is great, except for the price. $650 is just way too much for way too little.

I really love where Burberry has been taking its designs lately. It's added a whole lot of street style to its usually traditional aesthetic, and the effects are awesome. This cotton tote is the perfect balance of preppy and edgy.

Although white cotton may not be the most practical choice for an everyday bag due to its dirt attracting tendencies, all the black leather trim on this bag will be an excellent distraction. The contrast is graphic and dramatic, without being showy or unwearable.

The shape of this bag is relatively simple, but the details are complex and interesting. The simple rectangular style gets pulled in interesting directions by all the strap additions, and the straps themselves are beautiful and have just the right amount of buckles. The straps, however, are a little odd. Honestly, they just seem a little short for a bag of this size, but luckily there's a shoulder strap.

I love the look of this bag. $1,395 seems a bit expensive for cotton, but all the leather trim makes it seem a bit more reasonable.

Louis Vuitton & Burberry Awarded Record Copyright Payments | Designers Take Counterfeiters to Canadian Court

Louis Vuitton and Burberry have won record sums after successfully suing Canadian copycat labels. The luxury fashion houses finally took Singga Enterprises, Carnation Fashion Company, and Altec to task over the replica designer handbags they’ve imported from China for the past three years.

The Canadian court awarded Louis Vuitton the lion's share, at $1.4 million CAD, a sum that's equivalent to around $1.5 million US. Burberry's compensation was still nothing to sneeze at though. The British fashion house pocketed $1.1 million CAD, or approximately $1.14 million US. These sums are the biggest ever awarded in a Canadian court following a trademark counterfeiting and copyright case.

A statement of claim declared the offending firms were "involved in large-scale, sophisticated manufacturing operations in China and were importing vast amounts of counterfeit products into Canada with the intent of selling them nationwide in stores, at gift shows, and online." The court declared that these counterfeiting actions were "egregious."

Louis Vuitton's intellectual property director, Valerie Sonnier, said she hopes the ruling will send a strong message to counterfeiters around the world that Louis Vuitton has a "zero tolerance policy against counterfeiting."

I do wonder whether the counterfeiters will get the message though. While the payments have been getting bigger in these kinds of cases, Louis Vuitton has always been a litigious lot. If the threat of action hasn't deterred them before, will the bigger penalties do it?

Burberry’s New Fall/Winter 2011 Advertising | Ad Features New Models & Classic Bags

As the Northern Hemisphere basks in summer sunshine, the fashion industry is looking ahead to cooler weather. Burberry is the latest label to release images of its fall/winter 2011 campaign, and this shot almost makes me want to rug up.

Acclaimed fashion photographer Mario Testino shot the model newcomers for the Burberry ad. These guys and gals might be nearly novices, but they seem pretty comfortable in their lush Burberry coats, furry hats, and iconic Nova checked bags.

Burberry has an eye for talent, so perhaps we're looking at the next supermodels. The ad features, from left, British model and sometimes actress Amber Anderson, 16-year-old Molly Smith, blonde bombshell Thomas Penfound, and Felicity Jones. Do you think any of them have the potential to make a real splash in future ads, or on the catwalk?

I must admit, I like this ad but I'm not really loving it. Its rather tame by industry standards, relying on pretty people and attractive clothing and accessories rather than any real creativity. But then again, it beats those artsy-fartsy short films the fashion houses were producing not too long back! Perhaps Burberry's simple campaign signals a new wave in fashion advertising; one that focuses on the products rather than flash. What do you think?
