If you don't have a lot of money to spend on a brand new look, a colourful purse like the Angle from Big Buddha is a great way to help your closet pop.

The Angle's classic envelope style is paired with on trend colorblocking. I love the way Big Buddha's used the rainbow effect here. It's bold but with just three colors it stops short of being over the top. The turquoise back and flap clashes delightfully against the fuchsia front. The nude colored piping puts a gentle contrast between the two more vibrant hues.

The Angle isn't a workhorse, but it has the basics we ask of our clutch purses. It's not especially large but it should fit everything we really need for a night on the town. The slip pocket is too insubstantial to hold anything of note, but it should take care of receipts and other small important papers. Its chain strap is a bit flimsy, but it'll come in handy when you're on the move.

The Angle's simple but colorful styling is perfect for parties or a casual day out, so long as you know how to travel light. Its $49.95 price tag doesn't buy us a lot of luxury, but it does offer a bunch of style.

Sadly though, this handbag seems more nanna than Rihanna. It starts promisingly enough, with its gentle but eye-catching bronze color and tightly woven top. However towards the base the weave becomes more open and starts to look like the cardigans my grandmother might knit. Rihanna's known for taking fashion risks, and admittedly they don't always work, but her style usually appears more cutting edge than this tote.

While I didn't really like the weave, I'm sorry to see it's not continued throughout the design. If you're going to commit to a finish, you really owe it to your fans to see it through. The plain rear and side panels simply appear unfinished. We've seen this half-baked treatment from Big Buddha before, but the corner-cutting is still disappointing.

The interior is also a bit lackluster. While I can't really fault the trio of pockets, a space so large would be easier to use with a few extra compartments. And although the magnetic snap does the trick, I'd prefer a more secure zippered top on a bag so wide. It's disappointing to feel that every decision made could have been just a bit better.

That disappointment lingers as I look at the price tag. At $99.95 the Rihanna is far from expensive, but it's also not as impressive as many totes at this price point.

The Pearl's chevron stitching mimics Miu Miu's iconic Matelasse finish. I wouldn't say that it's a carbon copy, but it's definitely derivative. It doesn't have the same attention to detail, and as it's decorating synthetic it doesn't look quite as plush. However it still offers a great alternative for girls on a budget.

The stitching looks so lovely that I wonder why Big Buddha's used such large panels near the handles. These oversized patches really look out of place to my eye. More restraint would have seen the Pearl looking much more stylish.

If you prefer a more original look, don't worry. You just need to turn the hobo inside out! This hobo is completely reversible, so you can choose to show the stitching or a very glitzy gold skin. To make the conversion easier, Big Buddha's made all the handles detachable. This also allows us to enjoy a much cleaner look if we're using the detachable cross-body bag.

The detachable purse is another clever bonus. The pouch purse is pretty plain, so I wouldn't suggest using it as a clutch, but it's a handy place for stashing money or cosmetics.

It might not be the most original bag on the market, but it's also very affordable. $89.95 rarely buys us a bag with so many functional features!

It appears like so many woven raffia purses, but the Cassandra is actually crafted from synthetic leather. By using nude leatherette Big Buddha's ensured the finish has the same seaside charm as the natural fiber. However it's far less brittle, so we can fill this hobo up without worrying about it tearing under the strain. The natural toned manmade material is complemented by vibrant colored accents. I love the contrast of this turquoise hue, but there are also yellow, orange, and brown varieties if you prefer.

It's not as large as many hobos, but unlike its raffia cousins we can utilize all the space Big Buddha provides. The trio of interior pockets is stock standard, but it does the trick. There's also another zippered pouch on the back for the items you need on hand.

While it's probably a shade too small to work as a beach bag, the Cassandra would be ideal for a spot of shopping at the farmers markets or a picnic in the park. And at just $84.95, we needn't worry if it loses its appeal once winter rears its chilly head!

Perhaps Big Buddha shouldn't have given this tote such a grand name. It's hardly otherworldly after all. But there's a lot to like about this sweet bargain basement buy. I really like the unusual stitching, which creates a quirky hexagonal design across the front panel. I wish Big Buddha had continued this decoration on the back, but corner cutting is one of the label's old tricks. At least it appeases us with a zippered pocket on the back. It's not stylish, but it is smart.

The Zeus bucks the tote trend and gives us a whole lot of space. While it's refreshing that we don't need to squeeze our items inside, we probably didn't need quite this much room. However those generous dimensions mean the Zeus could work double duty as a weekender or a carry-on bag for those quick getaways.

I love the sunshine quality of this yellow Zeus, but I know the happy hue will scare some girls off. Happily Big Buddha offers its Zeus in four more shades, from youthful turquoise and pink to more subdued black and white. With such diverse options, there should be one to suit almost everybody!

Buddha Boutique looks to reward its loyal customers who've seen the original Big Buddha grow to become one of the largest affordable fashion labels in America. It looks to "show something different than what's in the department stores under the Big Buddha name," explained company president Jeremy Bassan. However he assures those dedicated supporters that the new range retains Big Buddha's sensibility.

"Something different" sounds like a pretty good way to describe the Buddha Boutique bags as they reportedly feature neon parachute quilting, Aztec prints and a range of shapes from small minaudieres to large tote bags.

I particularly like the minaudieres pictured. This style of purse is so often dripping in gemstones and reserved for after five wear, so it's refreshing to see some that are a bit more accessible and versatile. The red, pink, and orange version is perfect for the upcoming warm weather, but I can imagine wearing the blue toned one all year round.

The new line's name sounds high end, but the Buddha Boutiques are actually a little cheaper than their stable mates. All items will be priced under the magic $100 mark.

This is one of those special bags that appears much richer than it really is. The luxurious look comes from the zigzag weave, which elegantly dresses up the purse's synthetic body. The stitches cleverly hide the cheap material underneath. From a distance they also look like an intricate knit, which is perfect for the current chill in the air. Happily unlike so many Big Buddha bags the stitches are continued on the back of the bag for a sophisticated and cohesive look.

The interior is similarly impressive, with an array of zip and slip pockets. We've seen this kind of configuration before, but at this price point we don't take these kinds of organizational aids for granted. They work in tandem with the zippered top to make the Chloe secure. The dual handles are a shade shorter than I'd like, but most girls should still be able to sling them over their shoulder.

I love the classic appeal of the monochromatic color scheme, but the Chloe's also available in a more unusual burgundy palette if you prefer. Or perhaps, since they're only $94.95, you could indulge in both!

Big Buddha dresses up this wardrobe staple with some reptilian embossing to create the Dakota.

Exotic embossing can make a handbag look much richer when it's done right, or much cheaper when it's not. Thankfully Big Buddha excels with this lizard like design. It's not obviously trying to mimic any species, which is perhaps why it seems so convincing. The mix of differently sized scales creates a realism that's impressive on a bag of this price.

The interior does the job without exceeding our expectations. It's tending towards enormous, but the trio of inside pockets helps it feel more manageable. I'd enjoy a few more organizational pockets, but perhaps that says more about my own shortcomings than those of the tote.

Big Buddha offers plenty for our $94.95, including choice. I'm drawn to this burnished brown shade, but I'm happy to see it's not our only option. The traditionalists are catered for with basic black, but there's also yellow, green, and berry red for a pop of color. Which one's your favorite?

The name calls to mind Studio 54, the New York discotheque frequented by a who's who of 80s celebrities. I doubt this bag would have looked out of place there, but it might not blend as seamlessly into your everyday life.

Something tells me its fans would prefer to stand out though. And they'll do just that with this sequin covered creation. The glittery plastic pink discs are complemented by the chunky silver chain strap. The shiny materials are designed to make the maximum impact, and they do.

The Studio is smallish, but Big Buddha knows we don't need much on the dance floor. Its interior has pockets for a cell phone and the sunglasses you'll need as you emerge from the club. The Studio's soft body allows us to cram a few extra items inside, although you won't want to go overboard. When it's full that chain strap will become even more uncomfortable to carry. But we all know beauty is pain, right?

At $89.95 this cross-body seems a little expensive for what it is, but if you spend your weekends hopping from the cocktail bars to the clubs you might see value.

Big Buddha tends to favor synthetics rather than real leather, but it's rare to find them as lovely as this one. While it's a bit thin the leatherette is very soft. It probably won't fool anyone, but it's certainly worth the $104.95 Big Buddha is asking.

So many Big Buddha handbags are trend conscious, so it's refreshing to see one that follows more traditional lines. Its domed shape is softened with some well placed pleating. The classic diamond quilting is double stitched to give it a bit more personality. The gold-toned hardware complements the range of colors, which while traditional offers plenty of choice. Personally I can't go past the versatility of basic black, but there are five more options if it doesn't rock your boat.

The Uptown is also really practical, with plenty of space and organizational features to match. One wall has a large zippered pocket while the other has a duo of slips for gadgets. It doesn't exactly exceed our expectations, but when a bag is this affordable it's impressive just to get them met.

I'm not sure whether Big Buddha has done enough to convince posh types to trade in their leather, but this satchel is a great buy for bargain hunters.
