While working on a window display in Rome, ''I had this old suitcase and had to cover it with something,'' he said. ''So I decided to use a map. People went into the fur shop and wanted to buy the suitcase, so I thought why not make a line of luggage with a map print.''

The result is an antique-looking pattern with faded colors and old-fashioned graphics. There are numerous styles in the collection, which Mr. Martini calls Prima Classe. The bags, ranging from a wallet to a trunk, are of waterproof cotton trimmed with leather.
