Jessica Simpson might be getting some flack these days about her clothing choices, but she's still got some cute purses. It is undeniable that her company's line of bags has some of the best affordable yet trendy options out there. Her personal fashion reputation might be slipping a bit, but I don't foresee the sales of her brand declining at all.

The Tempest tote is a perfect example of the southern diva's chic designs. Though it isn't real leather, this oversized handbag has plenty of features that make it worth its price tag. The cappuccino brown is warm and inviting on the slightly textured material. You can also get the Tempest in black, blackberry purple, and olive green.

My favorite detail is the leather strap that connects to each of the handle anchors and loops from one side of the bag to the other. It gives the appearance of being a continuation of the shoulder handles themselves.

A leather hang tag and the bottom panel both bear the Jessica Simpson signature logo. The inside is lined with a cute brown gingham fabric and contains a zippered pocket for extra storage. This tote's spacious interior compartment closes with a magnetic snap. The Tempest is available as a hobo bag as well. The cappuccino tote version is priced at a very reasonable $98.

My initial impression of this Bottega Veneta clutch is WOW. I mean, seriously, who but Botega could do a modern take on the classic intrecciato clutch with such verve. They took a style that is so familiar and remade it into something that both retains the old school appeal, and adds a dose of devil-may-care.

I can't get over the color. The glorious apple green is so current, it makes you forget that neon is actually a retro trend. The woven design adds a layer of texture and a geometric edge to the rounded off box shape of the bag. The tonal leather trim around the edges of the box is a subtly luxurious touch. 

The brass knot clasp at the top is like the cherry on top of a hot fudge sundae. It brings the whole look together, but is delicious all on its own. This would add fabulous contrast to your favorite little black dress, or for a more daring look, could be paired up with this season's brightest brights.

Oh Marc Jacobs, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways: Rana Clutch with the gilded frog, Big Heart Clutch with the cut and paste confections, and now this, the terribly cute pastel Big Slice Clutch.

With its watermelon slice shape and gently gathered leather, the Big Slice is less kitschy than its frog and heart-adorned cousins. The supple, smooth leather is sophisticated, and the color is a couple of shades below eye-popping, making the Big Slice very wearable, er, carryable.

For me, this is the perfect seasonal transition accessory. It will add a spark of color to the last of your winter wardrobe staples, and will complement the lighter shades of spring beautifully. At 11" x 7" x 1", it is the perfect size for not carrying too much around with you on the longer days ahead.

I love the thickness of the wrist handle, and the way it is shaped to hug your skin. So many wrist handles just dig in or fall right off, but you won't have that problem with the Big Slice. The turnlock closure adds a little silver detail to the center of the bag, and the flap top opens to a front pouch pocket. The main compartment has internal pockets, as well, so for a wee little bag, the Big Slice packs an organizational wallop.

I could go on about the feature of the Big Slice, but what I really want to say is: this bag is just too cute. It reminds me of 1984 so much that I can hear Van Halen in my head. It's so versatile that it's the perfect clutch to take to a tea party, or for stowing those cigarettes you stole from mom.

Yet another addition to B. Makowsky's famous vacation destination handbag names, the St. Tropez collection hits the mark on almost every section. Like its other hobo brand name siblings the Lisbon and Tokyo, the St. Tropez packs a lot of unique features into one medium-sized purse.

This casual handbag comes in claret red, black, and stone white as pictured. I love the cream-colored tone that will serve you well throughout the year. Winter white is a trendy look that is quickly becoming classic, yet the color is appropriate for the warmer months as well. All three colors look great on the St. Tropez, but my personal pick is the white.

The hobo shape, always a popular and practical choice, is just one style option from this line. This B. Makowsky also comes in a wider, zip top hobo and a slightly more structured satchel bag. This slouchy hobo, however, has extra decorative hardware on the front that stands out. The logo-engraved plate is attached to leather pieces that run horizontally along the top of the handbag and loop through the buckled handle details on the sides.

I also love the triangular silver studs that adorn the bottom of the St. Tropez giving it the appearance of a little structure without adding too much. The interior is lined in an animal print fabric for a cheeky touch, and the top closes with a magnetic snap. This versatile and stylish B. Makowsky retails for $275.

Loud and proud singer Beth Ditto is turning her hands to another creative pursuit. She's stepping into the world of fashion design.

The Gossip front woman has just signed a deal with the Arcadia Group's plus-size clothing brand Evans. The design deal continues Beth's long association with the brand, who she's also modeled for in the past.

Beth is slated to design handbags, shoes, and formal and casual apparel for the brand. Her clothes will be available in sizes 14 to 32, which should please all the curvy ladies out there.

Evans head of design, Lisa Marie Peacock, will work closely with the singer to ensure the fashions represent her flamboyant signature style. We can expect the collection to have a 1980s retro style with a little glam rock edge. Think studded purses, colorful graphic dresses, and draped jersey tops.

The Beth Ditto for Evans range is set to drop this July.

Bulga's Tasia satchel strikes that elusive balance between city chic style and everyday practicality.

The Tasia's boxy shape is a surprise in a world of satchels sporting soft corners and curves. Personally I love the difference. It gives the Tasia a no-nonsense urban look, and also ensures it can offer more storage space than its competitors.

The buttery soft leather is rendered in a deep peacock blue. It might not be a traditional choice, but it's elegant enough that even the most conservative fashion lovers won't mind that it's the only shade on offer. The polished metal hardware makes the leather really pop.

The clasp closure looks stunning, and it's practical too. It might appear fiddly, but the hidden magnetic snap makes things simple. Inside a large zippered pocket divides the Tasia into three sections for easy organization. Additional pockets in the side wall offer even more storage space.

The Tasia features some of the widest handles I've ever seen, making it a pleasure to hold. The straps are a little shorter than I'd like, but they shouldn't make over-the-shoulder carrying impossible.

It's difficult to believe that it's been five years since Be & D designers Be Inthavong and Steve Dumain arrived on the fashion scene. To celebrate this milestone the punk-styled accessories brand has relaunched one of their most famous purses, the Garbo.

Gone are the outdated buckles of old. The new kid on the block is adorned with edgy spiked studs. Chic whip stitched handles add a little extra flair. Nostalgia buffs will be glad that the signature lambskin finish remains.

The latest Garbo is part of Be & D's capsule collection, which also includes reinventions of the Greta shoulder bag and Belleville hobo. This portfolio shoulder bag retails for $995, while the larger satchel style is available for $1390. I love this vibrant turquoise blue color, but if you prefer to play things a little safer you can pick up the Garbo in black, cream, and a subtle brown metallic shade called quince.

I often find myself wondering who actually photographs handbags for the web. Quite frankly I think I could do a much better job of it.

The photos just do not do justice to the remarkable style and sophistication of the majority of designer handbags.

For instance, the Valentino Histoire Belted Tote (pictured right) might be the sort of bag you'd easily overlook.

That would be a pity because it's such a gorgeous, well-appointed tote. Granted, Valentino has been churning out some questionable designs as of late.

Their obsession with roses is bordering on the ridiculous, and, yet, this stylish tote manages to wash away the sting of those other mistakes.

The Histoire Belted Tote features the familiar "braiding" design of its' other Histoire counterparts, but in a more subdued fashion. The effect is casual elegance at its' best. In person, this baby begs to be carried.

It managed to make my Old Navy t-shirt and 4 yr old Hilfiger jeans look chic. Now a bag that can accomplish that seemingly impossible task is bank in my book. I can't recommend it enough. The belted cinch top is visually appealing but not to the point of distraction.

It's quite roomy (17 x 15 x 6) and features two interior compartments separated by a zippered center pocket as well as a zippered compartment for smaller items.

I know many of you are still weary of patent leather (why?!?), but, trust me, you'll squeeze every penny of the steep $1895 price tag out of this bag. Now if I could just get a job as the web handbag photographer for Neiman Marcus, I'm sure I could boost their sales and help the economy along as well.
